about

On a connu clairement pire !

Oui, c’est vraiment cela : « Straight To The Point ! »

“This very special period made me think and put a lot of things into perspective. I said to myself, finished the superfluous, if this is to be my last album, I do not want to put anything unnecessary, the watchword is therefore: Straight to the essential! Hence the title of this album ”.

If it is true that what is clearly conceived is clearly stated, then there is no doubt that this album fits perfectly into this approach as it perfectly personifies the quintessence of the musical art of Fred Chapellier. Conceived, performed and recorded over a period of one year, to say the least, due to the uncertainties linked to Covid, “Straight To The Point” is a pure gem, a mixture that is both subtle, racy and devilishly effective. 'a blues that could not be more classic and a soul matinée of R&B more true than life, carried by arrangements of simply sublime brass. There is no doubt that in the game of comparisons, Robert Cray's name would come up more than in his turn to define an Anglo-Saxon resemblance. We have seen clearly worse!

But nothing surprising in that because those who follow the musical course of the one who is also the official guitarist of Jacques Dutronc, know that everything with him has always been a matter of nuances. Fred Chapellier is not one of those artists walled in unshakable and frozen certainties. You only have to listen to the introductory track ("Blues On My Radio") and its lyrics which resonate as a tribute to all those who influenced it to be convinced! Or to note the daring choice of a cover of Gladys Knight & the Pips ("I've Got To Use My Imagination") to understand that our man is not always where we expect him, taking over on his own all this musical heritage to make it his own by imprinting that personal touch that makes all the difference.

As always, Fred Chapellier called on his "historical" accomplices to compose and / or write this marvelous album. This is how throughout the 12 tracks we find the names of Neal Black on the very committed "Mother Earth" (also the 1st single from the album), Billy Price in particular on the addictive "I'd Rather Be Alone ”or the powerful“ Remnants ”or even Alain“ Leadfoot ”Rivet for a“ Tend To It ”and his throbbing“ old-fashioned ”bluesy groove. Not to mention Jimmy Britton, who has been left to frame the set with the introductory track mentioned below and the closing track ("Basket Full Of Blues").

There remains the interpretation, as always perfect, starting with this warm tone of voice which is his trademark. At the instrumental level, Fred Chapellier is not one of those guitarists who show off but it is clear that his playing, full of nuances and fluidity, make him an essential reference. And even when he devotes himself to the instrumental exercise on “Juliette” or a “Racing With The Cops” which does not hide the wink of an eye pressed to his master Roy Buchanan, it is always with the melodic worries pegged. to the body. Those who swear by technical prowess will be at their expense while those who swear by the prism of feeling will be over the moon! A bit like the graphic illustration of the album, whose "clear line" bias plays with the superfluous to get to the point! Yes, it really is: "Straight To The Point!" "
